Peoria Illinois

Hello all--

I thought I would post some general tips about Peoria. Its been several years since I lived there, but I still go back every year or so.

1)Monical's pizza. The thinnest of all pizzas, I think even thinner than Pat's pizza in Chicago. I remember a family dinner deal that was pretty good, it included pizza, salad, and soft drinks. Don't know if its still offered.

2)Trefzger's bakery. The family sold their bakery about ten years ago, but the cookies still passed my test. I got my wedding cake from them, and it tasted and looked great. Ask for the Italian buttercream frosting. Like all good bakeries with goods made on site, things tend to sell out fairly early in the day, so plan accordingly.

3)Lebanese food. I know, Peoria doesn't sound like it could harbor gems in the MidEastern food department, but Peoria has a sizable Lebanese population. Go in and try the Mom and Pop operations, and give Haddad's a try. So very, very good.

4)Paparazzi's. Its in Peoria Heights, and the food is good enough to remember. The menu warns patrons the serving size is "European" ie the size Americans should be eating...Its fairly small and closed Sundays and Mondays. Phone first.

5)Steak 'n Shake. I love In 'n Out, but Steak'n Shake still has a place in my heart.

6)Lariat Club. I had my wedding reception planned and ready to go. Six (6!) weeks before the big event, the restaurant I had booked went out of business. The Lariat Club had a banquet room opening, somehow, everything worked out. The staff was lovely, accomadating, and the food was good to boot. They are wonderful people, with a family owned business.

Hope this can help someone out...Does anyone have anything to add(or subtract) from this list?
