In the handful of years since The Penny Ice Creamery opened in Santa Cruz, a few times I've failed to drop in when passing through town because of inability to park downtown. This summer part of my incentive for grabbing breakfast at its affiliate, The Picnic Basket, was the chance to indulge in Penny's ice cream again. But alas, its scooping station was empty at that hour of the morning.
Then this Sunday during my mad dash around town taking advantage of streets emptied by Super Bowl viewing, I discovered that a satellite location had opened in Pleasure Point a couple years ago. Nine flavors available in the case, much easier parking on the street and a small lot in the back, and more straight forward freeway access will make this my branch of choice.
The friendly scoop staffer guided me to the Kids Double, $4.50, as the most cost-effective way to buy two flavors in a small amount. I ordered Bitter Caramel and Chocolate with Sea Salt Caramel after tasting them. The Bitter Caramel had a faint bitter note though I'd describe it as closer to smoky myself and luxurious buttery richness. Then gooey with salted caramel, the chocolate base was as concentrated in cacao as the laws of physics allow. The serving temperature of the ice creams was notably warmer than typical, almost into the near-melted quality of fine gelato, making the flavors bloom more forcefully on the palate. Amazing.
