Where to Peel an Orange aka Good Hikes

I'm going to try to slip this in under the Chowhound wire, so here I go...

I was once part of a group of people who hiked every Sunday morning. It was sort of a club. One of the rituals of the group was an undeclared snack competition in which hikers would try to top one another with delicacies that would be revealed only once we reached the summit of our destination. A given Sunday might have bestowed small sandwiches, cookies, salads, etc. but what turned out to bring the greatest sighs of pleasure (after hiking for an hour or two) were fresh oranges, fresh sliced mangoes and hard, fresh almonds.

So my question is this: what are some good hikes in the LA area, preferably the westside/beaches area for a moderately challenging hike with a great destination to peel your orange?
