Pearson's Let-Down

Haven't been to Pearson's, since it was in LIC and I had a hankering for BBQ after a trip to Louisville. Remembered it as a great, small ramshackle spot that was infused with the intense smell of smoking meat - and I recall thinking the BBQ was excellent.

Having just returned from a trip to Austin, I once again found myself with an urge for BBQ and immediately thought of Pearson's. This time around, I schlepped to their Jackson Heights outpost, since I heard that the new UES branch was still working out kinks.

Boy, was I disappointed. The brisket lacked zest and the ribs were without character. They only offered a faint smoky taste and the BBQ sauces they provided could add heat - but nothing by way of additional flavor.

Has anybody else had this same lackluster experience? And, if so, where or where do you find better BBQ? Virgil's? Blue Smoke?
