peanut allergies

Why is it that over the past couple of years peanuts have become a dangerous substance?
What happened in the 90's to suddenly make millions of kids allergic to peanuts (or other nuts).
People have been eating peanut butter since the 50's and for decades, nobody died. Now we have to worry about food processing (nut cross-contaminating), "peanut free" zones (daycare), etc.
There was a girl who died recently when she kissed her boyfriend after he had eaten something with peanuts. Kids were not dying in the 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's from a PB&J sandwich.
What's going on?
