I'll start with the question -- a question I've asked before without a lot of success: any good Mexican-American food out there?
Went out to a local Mexican-American place, Mexico Lindo, a mini-chain here in Vancouver. It's an old standby. Been eating there for years. They always have coupons, which helps, but it's also one of the better non-taqueria Mexican places I've found in Portland Metro. Good chips and salsa. Excellent black beans. Decent execution and flavors on all the standards, especially the various enchiladas, pollo platos, fajitas, and the like. They make a good arroz con pollo, pollo ala gloria, enchiladas hidigenas, among others.
I figure if a Mexican-American restaurant can't surpass Chevy's, it's not worth my time or money. And I think Mexico Lindo does. Not by a long ways, but by enough.
What's sad is how few others do. Despite Nancy Rommelman's article suggesting the contrary, I do like Esparza's. It's inconsistent, but it does have some really good dishes, like the BBQ pork nachos, very good chips and salsa, and even desserts that are better than average.
I know the taqueria scene fine. But I'd like to find a truly good Mexican-American restaurant, be it Tex-Mex, New Mexican, Sonoran, or Cal-Mex. So again I ask: anything out there?
