My brother and I (from Baltimore and DC) went to visit our friends that moved out your way this past weekend.
Wow. Portland is an amazing place. We had too many ideas of things to do but too little time. Can't wait to return.
First, I want your farmers market.
Now. Please send it to Baltimore.
We went to the one in the city on Saturday and I was amazed. I love my Baltimore farmers markets, but they don't even come close to what you have.
I could eat the berries alone and be happy. What a great resource. That alone makes me want to move out there.
Consider yourself lucky and go early and often.
Two meals that really stuck out were Park Kitchen and Ripe.
I read a great deal about Park Kitchen and it was well worth the visit. They really get what it takes to run a really nice, local place.
Ripe was something I wish every city had. Family dining, no choices on the menu and a real festive vibe. They certainly champion local ingredients and are very competent in the kitchen. There were a few misses, but if I lived in Portland they would get a visit from me on a regular basis.
We had a great breakfast in the city at a small diner near the Greyhound Station (cannot remember the name but great house cured corned beef hash) and another great Cuban meal across the river in the Belvedere(?) area.
Also, brunch at Equinox was silly good. Spicy is nicey and they offer it with their food and their bloody mary's.
Can't wait to impose on my friends again and come back for more.
Any time you come to DC/Baltimore, post on the other board and I will offer my 2 cents.
