A few friends of mine came into Portland for a conference so I took them to Veritable Quandary near their hotel. We had a great time, and VQ had been on my radar for a while and I'm happy to report that everything was awesome.
For our apps, we split the mushroom soup, the bacon-wrapped dates and the mussels/clams in Thai curry.
For our mains, we ordered the ravioli, the scallops, and the rabbit and pancetta.
For dessert, we shared the souffle.
Bacon-wrapped dates are among favorite app/amuse/hors d'oeuvres, but I actually prefer a hard, salty cheese like parmesan in the dates as opposed to VQ's chevre. The Thai curry drew raves but I actually thought the mushroom soup was the star app. It contained just enough truffle oil to make the soup feel decadent without being hedonistic.
Our mains were all quite good. I thought the rabbit was a tad overdone (I prefer it braised) but the star of that rabbit dish was its accompanying bed of sweet potato and onion. It had a great texture and a wonderful sweetness to it also. IMO it outshone the protein.
For dessert, the souffle was wonderfully light and airy and the chocolate was the bittersweet kind that I prefer. It went well with my snifter of 16 year old Lagavulin single malt scotch.
VQ seems to be popular among the downtown after-work set and I can see why. I'll definitely swing back when the visitors leave to further explore the menu.
