Made my first trip to the Vancouver Farmers Market this last weekend. It's actually been a couple years. It was so tiny and sad before. It now may have as many or more vendors as the larger markets in the area.
This comes at a cost, though. There are many more non-food vendors than food vendors. It's almost like a cross between the Saturday Market and the farmers market, although the crafts aren't so funky.
Some of the highlights: cherries from the Yakima Valley, gorgeous Walla Walla onions, the Kazakh and Uzebek food stand, and strawberries, if you could find them.
I also visited the Portland and Beaverton Farmers Markets. Empty flats of strawberries were piled high at each with signs like the one below tormenting me.
A question: anyone have a rec on who has the best strawberries at any of the markets?
Lots of vendors sold out of morels, too, though several still had some nice ones along with boletus.
I'm really eager to start seeing the other berries coming in, assuming this rain doesn't slow things down. And the cherries at the Vancouver market have me jonesin' for stone fruit.
