Spent a few hours at the farmer's market today, trying lots and looking closely at everything. Was very disappointed that I missed Archibald's (Cafe Azul) demo. I don't remember them being at 10 am last year.
Very pleased with the cheese this year. Got to try them all today. Lots of small artisinal places, not just Juniper Grove, now. Highlights: basil-hazelnut frommage blanc from Alsea Acres and the smoked sublimity from Oregon Gourmet Cheeses. Both expensive (like $16/lb), but very, very good.
A few stands with squash blossoms which was nice, something I hadn't seen there before. Bought a bunch for quesadillas tonight. Make the tortillas from scratch, go get some queso Oaxaca, grill everything on the comal, and yum! Definitely look for those.
I thought most people's blueberries were lacking in flavor. Lots of plump ones, but the small ones (like Huckleberries) have the best flavor. Anyone know the best stand for berries? Did get some excellent marrionberries, however, and tried some good blackberries.
Not a lot of good mushrooms right now, mostly oyster and shiitakes which are easy to get at the store. Lots of great onions, though: walla walla, spanish sweets, spring, etc. Nice prices on lovely fennel at several stands, too.
Anyway, I think it's looking pretty good this year, more variety. I can't wait until later this month when everything really starts to produce.
