My nomination for best pie in town goes to Half & Half, the quirky cafe at 923 SW Oak, 1/2 block from Powell's. It's my afternoon guilty pleasure. Any challengers?
Today's offerings were Ginger Pear, Cranberry Apple, and the piece de resistance, BANANA CREAM. Robin Rosenberg, the owner and pie lady, is a whiz with whip; her chocolate cream is also memorable.
The crust is flaky enough, but the real achievement is the filling, which is just sweet enough, and not corn syrupy-cloying like some I've had. Slices of ripe bananas are suspended in a smooth custard, and the whole thing capped by a mountainous drift of real whipped cream.
With a cup of Stumptown coffee in a nondescript ceramic mug, it's a worthwhile afternoon break. As always, unemployed looking hipsters hang out and read the house collection of obscure 'zines.
(Apparently, Crow sold out his half of the business, so it's not called Crowsenberg's Half & Half anymore. I guess she could have changed the name to "Rosenberg's Whole." Uh, no, now that I think of how that sounds.)
