[PDX] JaCiva's

Took some pics of JaCiva's today for my site. See link.

I hadn't been there or eaten their stuff in a while. But my previous impressions were solidified. It's just not very good. I'd get a wedding cake there if it wasn't too expensive, but I'd never buy their chocolates or confections.

We tried several European truffles and a few of their confections. All of them were cloying without much flavor. You couldn't even tell that the mocha was mocha. It tasted like the hazelnut without the crunchy bits. I would much rather (and it'd be cheaper) buy a Lindt chocolate bar or some of those Ferrero Rocher truffles you can get in line at Safeway for less than a buck. My wife thinks they're about See's level. I think they might be worse. I think they're definitely worse than Moonstruck. Much worse than Pix. And they're no comparison to Sahagun at the Portland Farmer's Market (who is back and I got to buy some tasty chocolate figs from today). We got some "rocky road" brownie or some such. After one bite, my wife's comment was, "Oh, it's a Ho Ho."

I've never tried their cakes and their wedding cakes look cool and one that we saw that someone had ordered looked great. But the chocolates and confections are pretty bad. (Oh, one more. I got a florentine, one of my favorite things. It tasted like a rice crispy treat with marshmallow cream in the middle, no crunchiness, and weak chocolate.)
