[PDX] February BBQ Outing Report...

Nick | Feb 14, 200401:17 AM     3

With four of the previous crew gone, the gutbuster threatened to be just a bust. However, with three new bellies ready to be bloated, February's event was another success. Campbell's vs. Yam Yam's, a BBQ showdown.

Yam Yam's Southern Cooking Barbecue

Attending: Nick, Jill, Amanda, Pamela, Anthony (new), Carol (new), Leopoldo (new)

We met at Campbell's where we had a table reserved in the newer area to the right. We decided on jumbo orders of pork spareribs ($12.95), sliced pork ($9.95), and smoked turkey ($8.95). Two sides and cornbread came with each of these so we were able to try all the sides: potato salad, coleslaw, greens, pinto beans, and black-eyed peas (actually, we got double slaw and didn't get the garden salad). We also finished by splitting two small sweet potato pies ($4.25). Unfortunately they were out of their specialty, the brisket. This is my fault. Every time I go there, they're out of the brisket. If you want brisket, don't invite me.

Afterwards, we convoyed over to Yam Yam's in north Portland to try everything from the "rooter to the tooter". This time we ordered two pork rib dinners ($10.75), a beef brisket dinner ($8.75), and a shredded pork dinner ($8.75). For sides we got the mac & cheese, fried okra, collard greens, and red beans & rice. We also ordered a side of hush puppies ($1.25). Again, we finished with some sweet potato pie ($3.25).

It was nice to have a new mix of people and I hope that means that our future get-togethers will even have more people. I think the gutbuster lived up to its name and we all got a good feel for the merits of these two leading Q joints in Portland.
