This year marked the third year I've bid on, and attended one of the Classic winemakers dinners. The auction itself is always great, and the dinners are usually good fun, and a great way to meet other food and wine enthusiasts. Aside from all that, the proceeds go to a handful of wonderful local charities.
The dinner I attended this year (on weds.) was at Carlyle. It was in thier kitchen, which is possitively amazing as restaurant kitchens go. It's gigantic! I found out later in the evening it is also used for catering. Anyway, not having been to Carlyle, I didn't really know what to expect. As it turned out, I was in the minority. Of the 18 guests at the table, all had been before with the exception of two of the wimemakers and I think one other person or couple. I only mention this becuase I honestly thought I was going to a NEW restaurant.
Ignorance aside, I enjoyed one of the best meals I've ever had in Portland, and I thought I was pretty savvy in terms of what's out there, but this was like a serious wake-up call! Am I the only hound in pdx living under a rock???
