I need to give a shout out to my neighborhood taqueria, Chilango's, on the corner of NE 15th and Prescott. It used to be a Taqueria Uruapan, but changed ownership recently. The burritos aren't much to write home about, but the tacos are amazing. The corn tortillas are handmade to order--hot, soft, toothsome--under a generous pile of asada, carnitas, lengua, or any of the other usual suspects. The sopes, little round masa boats topped with meat, beans, cheese, lettuce and crema, are also outstanding. There is a tienda attached with basic Mexican groceries.
I also recently discovered that Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon has an outpost on Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver, just east of I-5. They make fresh corn tortillas (from a tortilla machine, but still) every day. I have a summer picnic plan that involves a stack of fresh tortillas, some of their homemade salsa, and a styrofoam container of chicharrones de puerco from their deli case. Cool your palate with delicious iced horchata that the friendly owner will ladle out for you. There is also a huge selection of Mexican supplies from cotija cheese to pinatas to Jarritos soda. Did you know that the first listed ingredient in packaged chorizo is "pork lymph nodes?"
