[PDX] Bombe Gelato...

extramsg | Aug 28, 200504:51 AM

Took Springfever's recommendation and drove up north to Bombe Gelato in Battleground after dinner tonight. It's in a new strip mall (which one? there are so many up there) next to a Cinema. Good location. I'm sure many people will be up for ice cream after a movie.

Many, many flavors. 16 or so gelatos and another 12, maybe, ice creams. Several interesting flavors and few traditional flavors, both among the gelatos and the ice creams. eg, the gelatos included chai, snickerdoodle, white chocolate apricot chip, green apple walnut, and banana rum coconut. The ice creams included key lime pie, pineapple upside down cake, and blueberry cheesecake.

Flavors, both traditional and non-traditional, were consistent and acceptable. They could have been better, though. Each was more a caricature of their flavor. They didn't taste entirely natural. eg, about the watermelon sorbetto my brother-in-law noted that it didn't so much taste like watermelon as watermelon Jolly Rancher. That was true of most flavors. They didn't so much taste like the thing they were named for, but a candy version of the thing they were named for.

Despite this, I still enjoyed the ice creams. The textures were similarly decent, but not especially good. They were slightly gooey, though not Cold Stone or Parisi's gooey. Prices were typical.

Not worth a trip from Portland, I may still visit it on occasion since it's still closer to me than anywhere in Portland and tasty enough.

btw, they serve Stumptown coffee.
