Pastina problems

Over the weekend the Grubs intensified their search for a location for the son of a Grub’s wedding rehearsal dinner next month.

Pastina on Thursday nite proved problematic. Arrived about 6:45 for a 7:30 res to enjoy a cocktail or 2 at the bar. Unfortunately, there is no bar. So asked to be seated, which we were. Ordered nice bottle of chianti riserva from adequate & fairly reasonably priced wine list.

Told waiter that because we were early (& the rest. was pretty much empty save for the elderly early birders), we’d like a leisurely meal with our starters served consecutively. Starters were brought at same time. Bresaola exceptionally flavorful; fried goat cheese cakes wonderful.

Then came the fatal miscue. Appears a busboy armed with our main dishes while Signora Gruba is still savoring her bresaola. Cardinal sin in Signora-land. Particularly since we had specifically asked for leisurely service &, again, the place by this time was still no more than 1/3 full. Needless to say he was shooed away & La Signora tried to continue to enjoy her chow.

Don Grubleone’s bone-in veal chop special was terrific. Perfectly cooked & sparklingly seasoned. La Signora’s less so. Gnocchi on the rubbery side of tenderness in a simple but perfectly balanced pomodoro sauce.

Desserts a disappointment. "No macadamia nut tart--tiramisu." "No berry cheesecake--tiramisu." So skipped dessert. Waiter thoughtfully comped La Gruba’s tepid cappucino.

Table next to ours along the banquette experienced problems also. 1st group of 4 apparently ordered from the luncheon menu they were given & were charged from the dinner menu. Not happy. Woman of 2nd couple served wrong entrée. As a result, her companion was finished with his – tho he tried to eat slowly – before the dish she ordered was brought to her. Not happy.

So, the food was certainly good enuf for the Grubs to give Pastina a repechage, but no rehearsal dinner.
