Parkey's is a funny place. It's a "modern" structure, painted in spaceage colors, jutting rocket like over Harlem, very tomorrowland. As an old timer, it has always harbored a bit of reverence in the near west suburbs, yet I have had always avoided the place. One reason was that my well thumbed copy of Hot Dog Chicago noted that they used "kiddie" hygrade hot dogs. Yech.
I mentioned a while back that we finally gave Parkey's a try and were pleasantly surprised. We went again last night (not enough time to head out to Lombard). We will continue to eat at Parkey's.
What made me want to write about Parkey's is that just the other day I was at world famous Fat Burger in Las Vegas. And the fact is that lil' ol' Parkey's was a whole lot better than Fat Burger, without ever having been mentioned in any rap song.
I'm still running scared from the Parkey's dog, although my daughter was fine with it. I'm perfectly fine with the burger. It reminds me of what, maybe, Burger King was like at one time. Decent flame-broiled flavor, dressed the same with lettuce, tomato and mayonaise, and served on a wholesome seeded bun. Luckily devoid of microwaved cheese though. A good fast food choice.
But the fries, the fries. Fresh cut, fried once before you need them and again when you are ready to eat them, then tossed into a brown paper bag for maximum grease release.
A well trimmed burger, superior fries, you'd think this place would be famous!
Parkey's is on the west side of Harlem just north of Madison in Forest Park. If you have extra time afterwards, about 50 bars line the adjacent blocks on Madison in Forest Park. As I like to say, every bar in Oak Park and River Forest is in Forest Park.
