Yesterday - I finally was able to sample the fine empanadas from the "Park Slope empanada lady" - located (it seems rather randomly) at the corner of 5th Ave. and 13th Street.
The last four times I trekked down there (it's nearly 25 blocks from my apartment in the N. Slope) at lunch time she was nowhere to be found - though once the cart was there with not site of her. Weekdays and weekends, too.
Well, I have to admit it was worth the wait, at least somewhat. The chicken empanada was perfect, in a nicely fried, almost sweet pastry shell. At a buck a piece, these are my new Jamaican patties (well, at least until Christie's brings back the meatloaf pattie). The cheese one, however, was a slight disappointment. It was mexican queso blanco, not much flavor. However, as the shells are slightly sweet, I feel that this could be a great dessert treat, and I plan on grabbing a few for experimenting at home. Maybe with some fig jam or apricot sauce... or even a spicy chocolate sauce.
Now if only she'd open a "branch" in the N. Slope...
