While my parents were visiting Thanksgiving week, we had the chance to try out a few places for the first time. We had lunch at Parc Hong Kong which had taken over Hong Kong Flower Lounge’s site about a year ago. My mom’s first reaction on seeing the interior and the uniformed staff was a sharp look over to me that said, “this is too expensive”. (g) In one way she was right, the noodle dishes on the menu range from $9 to $12, surprisingly, so we didn’t order any of those. The prices for the dim sum plates which are supplied to order rather than shuffled around on carts were about the going rate for sit-down service. Yet all of this evens out if you order a “seafood special”. This was a live crab or lobster prepared in any of 10 to 12 different ways for only $11.99.

We ordered:

Shark’s fin and meat dumpling soup, $4.25 – the dumpling itself was good quality with flavorful jellied soup inside, but the surrounding consumme can’t compare to my favorite at Seafood Harbor in Millbrae

Steamed white beef tripe, $4.25 – one of my dad’s favorite things, and this was an excellent version. Blanched snowy white feathery illium piled high in a pool of subtly complex soy-based sauce and garnished with sauteed spring onions and fresh chilis

Shanghai steamed dumpling (4), $2.95 – pretty good with very thin wrappers and tasty soup inside, but lacking intensity of flavor in the filling

Shrimp and chive dumpling (3), $2.95 – doughy thick wrapper and muddy filling that didn’t taste freshly made, skip this one

Deep-fried taro dumpling (3), $2.95 – oil-logged, skip this too

Steamed chicken feet, $2.25 – very good with just the right texture of jellied softness yet some resistance still, flavored with nam yee (red fermented bean curd), my mom would have liked more garlic influence

Shrimp dumpling (har kou, 4), $2.95 – very good with translucent elastic wrappers and filled with whole shrimp

Salt and pepper Dungeness crab, $11.99 (seafood special) – good but not great, maybe because this was not a locally caught crab, or maybe we’re spoiled by the version at R&G Lounge

Overall, the quality was good enough to return. Next time I’ll stick with the steamed items and stay away from the deep-fried or pan-fried dishes.
