My girlfriend and I went to Perry Street last night for the first time, and had a very enjoyable evening. The cocktails were great, the space was cool, and the food was very good overall.
But the one question I have for anybody who has been there and had the Lemon Sole - is it me, or does it taste a little too much like Lays BBQ potato chips (as blasphemous as that might be to say).
For our entrees we had the aforementioned Lemon Sole, and the grilled black bass with ruby red grapefruit sauce. The bass was sublime; one the better dishes I have had in a very long time. The fish was cooked perfectly, and everything about the dish was fantastic: the mild char flavor from the grill, the perfectly crispy skin, the wonderfully interesting flavor from the grapefruit sauce...The Lemon Sole on the other hand, while we didn't dislike it per se, was just...surprising. Again the fish itself was cooked perfectly, but the paprika overwhelmed it to the point that all I could think about with every bite was BBQ chips.
It was surprising, because as my girlfriend put it, the flavor was just flat. It didn't have the depth of flavors one would expect. Also, it was surprising because I would have to imagine when the menu was being created somebody at somepoint said "You know...this tastes an awful lot like BBQ chips" at which point Jean-Georges would say "You're kind of right...maybe we should do something about that."
Anyway, As I said, we had a great evening and I would recommend Perry Street to all my friends, but just curios to hear other chowhounds' thoughts on the lemon sole.
