Pappadeaux was eloquently and humorously savaged on this board a couple of weeks ago. I had never eaten there before Saturday and didn't have plans to, based on that post, but I offer up one exception in its defense. On my way to Mitsuwa, I passed by a banner advertising a dozen oysters for 99 cents. I was naturally apprehensive, but did a u-turn and went in. I sat at the bar and asked the bartender for the story. He insisted they were "pretty good" so I ordered up a dozen along with a cold Sam Adams. The oysters are Texas Gulfs, and they were very large and very fresh, tasting of the sea--certainly comparable to many "higher grade" oysters I've had recently. Six bucks for a dozen oysters and Sam Adams set a nice tone for Mitsuwa, and I still had room for the fresh roasted chestnuts sold outside the store as well as the dumpling and bun samples inside. One note on the oysters: the bartender said they were suspending the deal for Valentine's Day because they'd be overwhelmed by the demand, but said they would resume it afterwards for a couple more weeks.
