About the time my son and husband were at the store buying what turned out to be a horned melon, I was at a Mexican grocery and was seduced by papayas.
I've bought them before and always been disappointed by the delicious appearance yet relative lack of flavor. But they were displayed cut in half, wrapped in plastic, looking very ripe and beautiful and delicious. And other people around me, people who looked like they knew what they were doing, were buying them! And so I thought, well, maybe the last one I bought wasn't ripe! Maybe these are better!
But no! I got it home, cut part of it up and put it in last night's mango-jicama salad (which per the recipe is actually mango-jicama-papaya-cucumber salad, from which I have edited out the papaya and cukes). Boring! Boring! (Not the salad, just the papaya.) Gorgeous, but boring!
Am I missing something? Is there a secret to unlocking the goodness of papayas?
