Well, it's the time of year when a young hound's thoughts turn to mangos.
You know those vans that park in Latino neighborhoods, with mangos, papayas, tall sugar canes (for juicing), sometimes baby papayas? They always have young coconuts, which they keep cool and will hack open with a machete so you can drink the juice (incredible and refreshing; gotta try it). And they always sell mavi, an elixer made from tree bark that happens to turn mildly alcoholic when exposed to heat (and, woops, storing the stuff on the roof of the truck makes them get a touch alcoholic, but it's strictly an accident).
I'd love to track these vans. They people running them are always friendly, the fruits and juices are always top class, and the experience of waiting while they juice your sugar cane with a noisy Rube Goldberg contraption never feels to transport me to another time and place.
So...c'mon chowhounds! Where do you spot these vans around the outer boroughs?
