On my drive north last week, I made a detour through Grover Beach (SLOCo) to check out the Mexican ice cream shop, Paleteria La Real Michoacana #2. Good thing, as this branch of the original in Santa Maria will close this month when the lease is up. The Santa Maria ice cream shop will stay open for its fans.
I chose one of the many variations of fresa con crema (strawberries with cream) popsicles available here. Vanilla ice cream encased in intensely concentrated strawberry ice was just the right pick-me-up for this break from traffic. I also got an agua fresca de California, a blend of lime, pineapple and orange flavored fruit water for the drive.
I did ask the amiable proprietress why Santa Maria was such a hub for paletas and Mexican ice cream. She had no explanation, but added that the quality found in that town's many paleterias tops the bigger cities. I'd say she's right.
