Paletas from La Michoacana

Melanie Wong | Jul 1, 2002 04:23 AM

With the start of scorching weather, I picked up an assortment of paletas (75¢ each) from First Market (840 N. Cloverdale Blvd., Cloverdale). The paletas de crema (ice cream bars) are 3.5 oz. and a whopping 220 calories or more whereas the paletas de fruta (frozen fruit bars) are 4.0 oz. and a sandia (watermelon) weighs in at only 60 calories with no fat.

Yet the piña colada was worth the calories with good concentration of flavor and creamy texture studded with shavings of coconut. I didn’t like the sandia quite as much, as it was not as intensely flavored. The guayaba (guava) got tossed because the mouthful of hard seeds with each bite were annoying, even though the freshness of fruit was delicious.

First Market had a wider assortment of flavors than I’d seen last season at other stores. Galleta (oreo), Pepino con chili (cucumber and chili), Eskimo (chocolate-coated), and Arroz con leche (rice pudding) round out the selection of fruit flavors – strawberry, mango, pineapple, coconut, etc.

The producer’s contact info is below to obtain more information on other outlets.
