On the advice of many chowhounders we went to Alegrias last night. It was quite empty making for a good place to visit with an old friend. The tapas were just ordinary. We had octopus which was bland, skewered pork which was also tepidly spiced, but good mushrooms with garlic. However, the paella was outstanding. We had the Valenciana and vegetarian and they were better than those I had in Spain. We also had a nice bottle of Ribera, the reserve from the late 90's which beat the pants off of the Rioja for Casarras. The waiter was very fine and paid particulr attention to some dietary restrictions in our party.
