The way I see it, Pacific salmon is an expensive, strong-tasting, dry, less nutritious, less versatile, and less sustainable choice. Meanwhile, Atlantic salmon is an economical, nicely flavored, juicy & tender, more nutritious*, more versatile*, more ethical*, and more sustainable* choice. Furthermore, I have the option of either wild Atlantic salmon from the Maritimes/Scotland, or farmed Atlantic salmon from anywhere else. Could someone please explain some things that might actually be considered good about Pacific salmon?
*More nutritious due to more fat, and therefore more Omega-3 fatty acids
*More versatile due to the well rounded-flavor
*More ethical due to these factors mentioned below
*According to the WWF, certain Norwegian salmon farms (which IKEA sources 100 percent of its salmon from) are the most sustainable salmon farms in the world and are more sustainable than any of the Pacific salmon fisheries. The farms are also certified by the ASC, and Norwegian law states that the absolute maximum concentration of salmon in the pens at any given time may be no more than 2.5 percent. That's not all. The Norwegian salmon farmers are feeding the salmon fish that allow for a 1 to 1 ratio of feeding to salmon, and to solve the sea lice problem they have lice-eating wrasses in with the salmon. Last of all, the farms are kept extremely clean, and fish feces are carefully removed and disposed of. To summarize, salmon on Norwegian farms are essentially living the dream, with lots of food, abundant space, protection from predators, and "cleaner" fish that eliminate sea lice, plus a super clean environment. Compare that with a Pacific salmon's life: Living in a slightly filthy place (the Pacific garbage patch) where there are no guaranteed meals, no parasite protention, and everyday could be your last, and you can see why I choose Atlantic over Pacific salmon
Edit: For those who may not have realized, I am also talking about wild Atlantic salmon in addtitoj to the farmed variety. Why would wild Pacific salmon be considered superior to wild Atlantic salmon?
