Oysters in non r months

Went out with 2 friends (in Boston) and ate nearly 4 dozen oysters and some mussels between us last night. Call me crazy (wouldn't be the first time), but I thought they were pretty darn good, even in June. Now, does the fact that they were mostly from Oregon, Washington St., Canada, and some from the Northeast US negate the whole "r month" theory since they're cultivated from mostly still cold water? Or is the "r month" thing an old wives (or fishermen) tale?
