I tried Oyamel in Crystal City last night and was terribly disappionted. I'm not understanding the hype but I'm not surprised since I am one of few who thinks Jaleo (the same owners as Oyamel) is way overrated (I lived in Spain and Jaleo is about as Spanish as Taco Bell is Mexican). The food at Oyamel was pretty boring. We tried the traditional ceviche and it was bland at best. It was in a tomato-based sauce and lacked the fresh citrus flavor that I think of when I think ceviche. The tacos we tried were pretty good but you can get much better at El Charito Caminante in Arlington (apples and oranges, I know, but still...). The margaritas were good but small. If you're going to charge $8 for a margarita at least make it worth the price. The huachingo a la veracruzana (red snapper) was also pretty boring. The potatoes with mole were soggy and the mole was not very good (I love GOOD mole). My friend (who is a big foodie) and I agreed that nothing on the table was exceptional. A very solid mediocre though. The atmosphere is great but the food isn't. By the way, I love Zaytinya (near MCI Center, same owners).
