I didn't see where anybody posted on this, so....I highly recommend reading the Spring 2005 Oxford American, their "first ever Southern FOOD issue." John T. Edge is the guest editor.
I'm just a little bit into it, but have found some of the "Odes" to be great...there are odes to (among others) ice, chicken & dumplings, hangover cures, chicken fried steak, and "praise wine" (think Mogen David). Short recolletions on civil rights lunch counter incidents, South Carolina rice varieties, biscuits, okra....lots of good stuff. Local (to the Triangle) guy Hal Crowther has a nice story.
Well worth $5. After vainly trying local booksellers, I got mine at Barnes and Noble.
