I just had dinner at Little Owl on Bedford St. with 3 other people. We went early on Sunday (although the Gay Price parade made it really difficult to navigate downtown). The place had a great vibe. Gabriel, one of the two owners (the other is the chef), greeted us warmly when we arrived. Our waitress was really great. We shared softshell crabs, cavatelli, and a special arugala, white peach, fig, and brie toast salad. The crabs were expertly done, although lacked the really interesting flavors of the other two dishes. For a main, two people shared the dorado, and the other two of us each had the crispy chicken. The chicken came with "asparagus home fries", which, just like it sounds, is a mixture of asparagus and homefries. There are also shitakes and some other things in there too. We liked it so much, we ordered an extra side. The chicken was amazing. I didn't get to taste the fish, only because no one was willing to give any up. To drink, we had a Marques de Murrieta Ygay Reserva 2001 rioja. It was good enough for me to write down the name so I could search it out. Thw wine list is small, but well chosen. For desert we has the brownie with chocolate ice cream, the strawberry tart with custard, and a scoop of the basil (and something else) sorbet. All were excellent. The ice cream and sorbet comes from Labortorio del Gelatto. This place reminds me of Little Giant. A small neighborhood place (30 seats maybe?) with a guy who really knows how to cook. Really good. Came to $50 a head before tip.
