What can I do with overly-firm, prepared chickpeas?

NancyC | Oct 29, 202005:15 AM     14

My neighbor gave me a batch of chickpeas he'd prepared, which have great flavor (I'm in Sri Lanka, so you can imagine), but are far too firm for my liking. But I don't want to re-boil them because they're already seasoned & mixed with onion etc. I tried steaming for a really long time, but it doesn't seem to be having any effect. The holes in the steamer basket are too big so I placed the chickpeas on a plate. Plenty of holes around the plate for steam to get through, but no direct contact. I don't have an oven so I can't go the other direction and make them crispy.

Wondering if either I'm underestimating how long steaming would take to soften (at least an hour), OR if anyone has ideas for ways to use already-cooked, already-flavored chickpeas? If they were the right texture I'd just eat them with a spoon, they don't really need accompaniments. Can they get softer with stirfrying? Try to mash them and form into some sort of patties? I guess I could top a salad with them...don't want to waste them and I have kind of a lot.
