Otto's Brauhaus

nizza | Jun 8, 2006 03:36 PM

We had a fabulous dinner at Otto's thanks to MoCoTechPrfl, who posted about this great German restaurant a couple of weeks ago on another food board.

We were driving from North Jersey to Lancaster last Sunday, and we pulled off the Penna Turnpike just to have dinner there. The restaurant is just 5 minutes off the highway with easy off and easy on access.

Well, Otto's has a wonderful German Buffet on Sundays from 4 to 8 PM, and the food is the real deal. Just wonderful. They had (if I can remember all of it) roast loin of pork, sauerbraten, beef rollade, knockwurst, bratwurst, Hungarian goulash (the best EVER), pork schnitzel, a meatloaf that was also delicious (and I'm not a big meatloaf fan), chicken breast in a cream red pepper sauce, and THEN, if that's not enough, they had hand cut and served Prime Rib. Accompanying the meats were: red cabbage, sauerkraut, hand cut french fries, mashed potatoes, onion rings, spaetzle, peas and carrots, 3 different gravies, delicious homemade chicken soup, tossed green salad, German potato salad, cucumber salad, and cole slaw. Whew!

AND if that was still not enough (and I'm really sure that I forgot to list something) they had homemade apple strudel, bread pudding, rice pudding, brownies and strawberry shortcake, everything from scratch.

It was really unbelievable. The food was absolutely top notch, not just some kind of attempt at German cuisine. One in our party is part German, and has been to Germany, and he was mightily impressed, saying it was the best German restaurant he's been in, in the USA. This is not a quantity over quality place either. You got all this AND ice tea or coffee for only $18.95. A real deal in my book.

We got to meet the chef, who is an old timer from "the other side". A nice guy who takes obvious pride in what he prepares. Well worth the trip.
