I'm interested in checking out Ottolenghi while I'm in London, mainly because I've been hearing about it a lot, and it's known for creative vegetarian dishes.
I'm a bit confused about it though: there's multiple locations with different features; apparently it's known for takeout, but has a seated component also; is it best for breakfast/brunch or dinner, etc.?
Any recommendations for getting a good Ottolenghi experience?
Haha joeljkp, you and I seem to be on the same trajectory (I responded to an earlier post of yours). I too was looking at the Ottolenghi in Belgravia which appears to be a fancy take-out. I'm assuming I can stop by there around lunch time (or earlier to avoid crowds) and pick up something to picnic on in the park. Maybe I'll run into you there :-)
I wasn't blown away by Nopi. Agree better to get a great lunch, salad or baked tasty from the Islington branch.
The four shops/restaurants all have slightly different formats. This link http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk/locations/ describes exact of them, two are proper restaurants, two are deli's with communal tables where you can have light meals (but neither, to my knowledge take bookings).
If you do end up eating at one of the locations, try the broad bean fritters if you have the chance. That's the one dish that stands out in my mind from a meal at Nopi.
I like Nopi, and it's good for lunch or dinner. The cafe in Islington I think of as more a cafe than a restaurant, although I had a lovely early evening meal there once before going to a concert at Sadlers Wells. The salads in particular are excellent but what I wouldn't miss are the cakes and desserts.
I like going for two things, breakfast (yoghourt, fruit salad and granola though friends rate the bread basket, the coffee is good) and take out salads that are a joy.
I am sure that eating in at lunch and dinner will be good from a food perspective but the dominance of the communal table (in Islington) and the queues put me off.
