Otto gelato mini-review

Stopped by the Otto gelato cart today for my first sampling of Otto's gelato that I've been hearing so much about. I was dissapointed by the limited offerings: chocolate, vanilla, coconut and lemon. Not feeling in the mood for a fruit flavor, I went with the vanilla and chocolate.

I know this is a heretical statement on this message board, but I was not overly impressed.

Let me start with my one very positive comment: the consistency of the vanilla was absolutely perfect. Authentically creamy and soft, whic is no small feat since I've yet to have gelato outside of Italy that got the consistency of their product correct. The chocolate, however, was too hard and icy. There were actually tiny ice crystals in the chocolate, which I doubt was intentional. Must mean either this was a bad batch or was kept at too low of a temperature.

Taste-wise, the chocolate was quite good, but the vanilla was nothing special. I really wanted to like the vanilla (believe me, I did) because the consistency was so damn perfect, but nothing stood out about it.

Before you start blasting me with your replies, let me say that, shortcoming aside, this was still the best gelato I've found thus far in NYC and I'll be heading back to the cart soon to try their other flavors.

Go ahead, blast away.
