A few weeks ago I posted a query about a good shop near my hotel in Gatineau for Quebec cheeses. I'd like to thank Mary Louise for her recommendation of the Byward Market and give a brief report back. I definitely made a point of getting over to the Market when I was in town, and was quite impressed by all the vendors and shops. I wish there were something comparable in Chicago!
Mary Louise's mention of La Bottega gave me a good starting point. Bottega Nicastro is certainly an excellent Italian salumeria, and I did get a couple things there, but for Quebec cheeses I thought the selection at International Cheese and Deli, a small Lebanese grocery store, was even better. The woman there was also extremely knowledgeable and helpful. If I lived in Ottawa I would go to her store often.
Let me also mention an enjoyable dinner I had during my stay, at Le Tartuffe in Gatineau: wild game terrine for a starter, followed by rabbit stuffed with apple and oyster mushrooms. Excellent food, and reasonable prices. This was a recommendation from the hotel concierge, and a good one.
Thanks again to Mary Louise, and to the Ottawa/Gatineau chowhounds who contribute their information here. I enjoyed my brief visit very much!
