O'Rourke's Diner

Well, for those who love this place and those who have been there...It's been nearly a week since we were there on Saturday. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE BREAKFAST AND ONLY BREAKFAST ALL DAY, AVOID THIS PLACE ON THE WEEKENDS!

We got there at 11:45 AM with a plan to try several menu offerings including the famous steamed burger with White Vermont Cheddar the Sterns (Roadfood) wrote about. Hello...That's why I went there.

We received a 4 page Brunch Menu that had to have at least 100 items on it....All breakfast type items like eggs, pancakes, french toast and various combinations of these. The chef had to stay up for nights on end coming up with these combinations! Did they all work? I'll let you all be the judge.

When I asked for the lunch menu, the owner, Chef O'Rourke, just so happened to be passing our table. He said "You should be able to find something to eat on this menu - there are only 120 items." Well, thanks Chef O'Rourke.

The waiter took our orders, but first had to consult with another wait person ...He did not know if any of our selections required asking how the eggs were to be prepared. To think anybody could remember all these combinations would be a stretch. Well, perhaps a Harvard or MIT student.

The Irish breakfast caught my eye. I'd never had Irish bacon. It came with 2 eggs, hash browns, corned beef hash and excellent brown Irish bread. The food over-all was good....Far from great. I know this is a matter of preference, but I do not like cubed hash brown potatoes...They never get to the required doneness that I personally like. There were lots of cubed potatoes at O'Rourke's.

There are many who love the place...We talked to a few outside while waiting for a table. One couple loved the raspberry pancakes. We tried some take-out baked goods and they were not good. Very dry with no hint of butter.

The Chef obviously has a passion for testing out as many combinations as he can think of and Brunch Weekends seem to be the place he does that. He also has some type of special meal once a week for dinner.

I just wish I could have tried the steamed cheeseburger along with a sampling of breakfast of lunch items. Hey, it's his restaurant and he says no lunch items on the weekends! Yes Sir!
