Back to New Orleans

We're looking forward to our first trip back to NO after 20 years. Back then, my husband was doing environmental work in Grand Isle and we got to spend several weeks in town. Now we're going back in mid-February with our daughter who is applying to Tulane. We've got reservations at the Embassy Suites near the Warehouse district (which wasn't even "there" in "our time".) Is this area safe? Tulane has a deal with Iberville Suites. Would that be better? We won't have a car.
As for food--nothing stays the same, but it sounds like a lot of the classic places are still there. We definitely want to get back to Acme, Bon Ton, and Cafe du Monde. We like local, "down home" food, not fancy places, and we've gotten some good ideas from reading the postings here. We'll be in NO mid-week. Will that make getting into places any easier? We have 2 kids, one is adventurous eater, the other is not. Any suggestions for us?
Also--one of the kids really likes "ghost tours." Are there any good evening walking tours? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
