I've been eagerly awaiting the opening of Spanish sandwich shop 100 Montaditos for months now, ever since I first heard a location was opening in Waterford Lakes in East Orlando. It's a huge chain in Spain that has recently expanded to Miami, and now we've got one... and I'm very happy we do, since I LOVE sandwiches and cured meats.
100 Montaditos is modeled after Spanish tapas bars. They have *100* varieties of little sandwiches with a wide variety of meats and cheeses and other fillings, some familiar and some a little more exotic. They come on incredibly delicious fresh-baked rolls called montaditos, which are like perfectly crispy mini-French bread loaves, but I do mean "mini." I'd have to say they are about 4" long and only about 1.5" wide at their widest points in the center, so these are wee little sandwiches. That way, you can order a variety and share and try new things!
If I were you, I'd look over the menu a bit in advance, because it can be overwhelming:
Don't panic, though: THEY'RE CHEAP! All the montaditos are priced at ranges between $1 and $3. If I'm lyin', I'm flyin'. Perhaps best of all for people who live near Waterford Lakes and UCF, on Wednesdays, all 100 montaditos are $1. The place will probably be a madhouse on Wednesdays. Just FYI, since Waterford Lakes is so huge: if you're facing the Regal movie theater, it's to the right, near Friendly Confines.
My wife and I got a platter with the following montaditos, which came arranged in a nice circle with a center full of potato chips:
1: Serrano Ham
37: Chistorra and Piquillo Pepper (chistorra is a spicy Spanish dry sausage, and the sweet, spicy peppers made this one my probable favorite.)
43: Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese
47: Shrimp and Guacamole (my wife loved it)
51: Roast Beef, Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, and Crispy Onion (like the French's onions you top Thanksgiving green bean casserole with; awesome, needless to say!)
59: Burger, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, and Lettuce (the counter girl's recommendation, which I would have skipped otherwise, but it was good)
62: Serrano Ham, Pulled BBQ Pork, Iberico Cheese, and Spicy Brava Sauce (which is like an awesome spicy, creamy mayo-based sauce, and this sandwich is a house specialty called the Serranito.)
78: Hummus, Eggplant, Fresh Tomato, and Arugula (another choice my wife made)
98: Anchovies, Tuna, Fresh Tomato, and Mayo (this one was on the $3 menu, and the roll was slightly larger and more like a mini-ciabatta, but I expected better quality tuna.)
It turned out to be much more food than we expected, and we took four of them home, completely untouched. Everything we did try was delicious, and I highly recommend them.
We also split an order of fries, which came with ketchup, honey mustard, alioli [sic], and spicy brava sauce. They were some of the best fries we've ever had -- like fresher, crispier, less-greasy versions of Checkers and Arby's seasoned fries.
We don't drink, but they have very cheap Spanish beers and wines there, going along with the tapas bar style.
What we didn't love was the seating -- either low stools or high-top stools (and a few outdoor tables shared with Marble Slab Creamery next door), definitely not comfortable for sitting in for any length of time. In the future, I'd probably place an order to go, although I don't know if those delicious fries would withstand the drive home.
As an amusing aside, we stopped by Marble Slab for dessert afterwards, since those have almost all disappeared from the area. I'm not the hugest fan since I feel like mixing in those pricey toppings by hand causes the ice cream to melt, and their base flavors are pretty bland, but my wife likes it, and a kind woman in line ahead of us gave us a 2-for-1 coupon. My wife got her pretty typical swiss chocolate with M&Ms mixed in, but we both had a good laugh about my very Chowhoundy selection: maple ice cream with fig preserves mixed in (two of my favorite flavors that you never see anywhere, much less with the possibility of combining them). Yes, it was good.
