Origin of Calamari Arrabbiata

hyperbowler | Sep 9, 201505:15 PM     9

Deep fried squid rings in a spicy, garlicky, red-sauce studded with sliced pickled cherry peppers. I ate this for the first time last week on Long Island. The components are standards at Italian American restaurants, but I never had them composed in this dish before. What's its origin and when did it appear?

At least by that name, the earliest reference I can find is in the LA Times in 2002, but it doesn't mention cherry peppers.
