Located in a Scarborough strip plaza with the name of ' International Gourmet Street', this small Chui Chow eatery must be one of the most cramped restaurant in town! Apart from its size, what sets this restaurant apart from its competitors is their offering of an advance order ' Omakase-trust me' style, chef tasting menu for party of 8 or more. Whilst making our reservation a few days in advance, we instructed the restaurant that our party of 9 will be opting for the $25 pp tasting menu. With this, we left the fate of our meal in the hand of the chef! Hope he was in a good mood!!! :D
The restaurant was packed when we arrived on Saturday at 7.00 pm. Patrons waiting for a table were standing inside and outside of the restaurant. We were taken to our table immediately and our food arrived minutes after we were seated!!
First course was a huge appetizer platter comprising of the following:
- Julianne of Chinese preserved Radish, Bitter Melon and Marinated Jelly Fish.
- Chinese style 'Chicken fried Steak' using Braised Beef Brisket.
- Fried Dace Fishcake wrapped with Taro paste.
- Squid balls with whole scallop, Chinese Ham and Asparagus stuffing, drizzled with revamped mayo
- Smoked Soya Duck.
Subsequent main dishes include:
- Braised Goose web with oyster and abalone sauce paired with steamed Winter Melon and mushroom medley
- Double Boiled Soup of Fresh Coconut, freshly grind Almond Milk, Snow Fungus, Pork Hock and Free Range Partridge. ( OMG! What a soup! )
- Duo of Florida Yellow Fin Garoupa. Sauteed filet with Sugar Snap Peas and Celery; Deep fried filet with homemade bread crumbs paired with sweet and sour house secret dipping sauce.
- Chinese Cabbage Dome stuffed with braised Fish Maw, Pumpkins and Straw Mushrooms paired with sauteed Pea Shoot.
- Sauteed Double Lobster with Pumpkin Cream Sauce.
- Traditional Chui Chow 'Double Sided Crispy Yellow Noodles' served with sugar and Black Vinegar.
- Dessert of deep fried Black Sesame filled Mo-chi paired with stewed Yams, Pumpkins and Taro in Honey Syrup. .
My overall impression of this rather unique meal was the huge size of the dishes and the excessive quantity of food! There must be enough food to feed 19, let alone just our 9!!
Food wise, almost every dish involves a special twist from the normal rendition and were very labor intensive! Definitely not your normal run-of-the-mill stuff listed on regular menus.
My favorites include almost every components of the appetizer platter, the unique sauced lobster and the amazing soup. The latter was one of the best Chinese Soup I have tasted this year! As for the lobster, it was really refreshing to see it being prepared with a delightful cream sauce. The accompaniment of a couple of warm crispy crust baguette to mop up the sauce was a nice touch!!
At $25 per person including tax for so much quality food, I am at a lost for words!!
