Organic, raw milk. Skowhegan, (Central) Maine

Pat Hammond | May 9, 201207:01 AM

There was a surprise in the fridge on this recent visit to Skowhegan. I'd been hearing about the delicious raw milk from Skowhegan's Grassland organic farm, but this would be my first taste. I was unsure whether to shake the bottle to incorporate the thick head of cream at the top, but standing around thinking about it, I wasn't drinking it, so I shook it up. (I think I'd pour off the cream sometimes to pour over something decadent and enjoy a lower fat milk.) It's really delicious, almost sweet. My sister gets it at the Farmer's market in town, but the natural food store, Spice of Life, carries it too. If you're in striking distance, this milk is worth a drive. The Farmer's Market is terrific too: Somehow they manage to stay open all year.
