I'm considering ordering a side or 1/4 of beef. I have these three farms in mind:
I've never tried their beef, but this is the only place that seems to have any reviews on the internet, but those reviews are all old. Price here is the best at $4.15/lb.
I've tried their beef via a box order from West Side Beef. I was mixed on it - I didn't find the secondary cuts to be any better than supermarket (but I'm perhaps not that discerning) and recall thinking the one primary cut I got to be "fine" - to be completely fair, I DO NOT think I've given these guys a fair chance, and I would like to drop by and pick up a rib-steak for a proper test. Prices here are $4.50/lb which seems to be about typical for grass-fed.
I've bought rib-steak from these guys twice at a Farmer's Market, and thought they were very tasty. They are at $4.50/lb for a side.
I just wish I could get some more reviews. Part of me wonders how much difference there can be between two grass-fed-cows.
Anyone have any experience with the above, or with ordering freezer-beef in general? Is there another farm that I should be considering?
My benchmark steaks are those I would get from Cumbrae or Sanagan's. I'd want the prime cuts from my 1/4 or 1/2 to be the same quality as what I buy from them.
