Ordering whole salmon from Alaska...worth it?

slaton | Aug 4, 2003 04:42 PM

Hi- Anyone out there mail ordered a whole salmon from Alaska? I'm thinking about it, and I've done a bit of research (including a post on the PNW board). One place will overnight me a whole headed and gutted king salmon for $10 a pound, or a sockeye for about $7 a pound. That includes fed-ex, and they promise to send fresh fish (not flash frozen) if you request it.
Anyone done this? I want to hot-smoke the thing, so I figure the higher fat content of the King is better than the sockeye? But Im open to any suggestions here. Sock-eye? King? mail order? Thanks.
