orchidea

Hi; I posted a question about NY romantic spots a while back .
My wife and I ended up going to Orchidea. Thanks to Unle Moishy for suggesting it. The ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. Muted lighting, quiet music, elegant decor. The presentation of the food was also excellent, which I realize now also lends a lot to the experience of making it a specail occasion.

re: the food, please note at first that I am not a gourmet by any stretch. I rarely eat out in restaurants.
A big + for me were that they give a whole loaf of warm bread (I hate not having enough bread at the meal). We started with mozarella skewers which were good (mmmmmm... fried cheese ) w/ a good garlic cream sauce, and mushroom drops (mushrooms in puff pastry) which were also good.
My wife had the Salmon, which has a tasty Orange Sauce. I had the red snapper, which I thought was blah. I am not a big fish person, though. I liked the mashed potatoes and french fries, though :P .
The chocolate souffle was great, and I can't really comment on the cappucino cheesecaske I had, because I was to full to eat it after having eaten most of a loaf of bread, mashed potatoes, French fries, etc. (and half of my wife's souffe :) ) I did take it home, but my son ate it. He has not expressed an opinion, which I suppose is not surprising as he is 17 months old.
Service was good. A few waits to get the waiter's attention , but the bus service was great (I never had to ask for water, and I dring a lot of water.) and the waiter was freindly and attentive, except for the few times i guess he was busy.
Total bill $110, but at least I didn't have to pay for parking in Manhattan!
Note also for others that though 18% gratiuty is already included, there is also a TIP line on the credit card reciept, so beware of double tipping by accident.
