Opinions on basting a brisket

I've seen various opinions on whether or not you should open up your smoker to baste your brisket to keep it moist. What are some of your opinions on the subject and why? I'm asking because the last brisket I made didn't turn out quite right and I opened my bbq to spray my brisket with a fine mist of beef broth to keep it moist during the cooking process.
