oops, had one more question (about appe-teasers)

Sorry, but in addition to the tapenade, I wanted to bring the yummy alder-smoked salmon (in a vacuum-packed thingy) that I got this summer at Jack's Fish Spot at Pikes Place Market in Seattle. It's a fillet, about 2 lbs. How would one serve this as an appetizer before we sit down to eat dinner? Slice it? Have folks break off chunks? I don't know that I'll have the time to make canapes, but would that be an option? Make-your-own-canapes with black bread and cream cheese? Help me, oh fellow chowhounds...
