The wife and I went to Oliveto tonight (we're L.A. chowhounds, here for the weekend).
The space is beautiful. It's very welcoming and cosy.
The food was fantastic, inspired, sublime--insert more hyperbole here--(bitter greens w/pancetta, halibut tartare, pasta with rabbit, lamb chops, tangerine cake).
Our server, unfortunately, wasn't even close to Oliveto's league. He was uninterested, diffident, and generally inattentive to us as a table. Maybe he had a bad day, or a nasty table before us, or a stubborn case of PMS. Guess what? Not our problem. (And no, we're not nasty, picky, or demanding.) If he was slammed with tables (which he clearly wasn't, since we saw him casually chatting people up), he could have told us so.
Fortunately, even his Herculean attempts to spoil our dinner were no match for the food. You lose, bad server: we had fun anyway. Please feel free to find a job better suited to your personality.
