Olde Port Inn | Avila Beach - SLOCo

California Seafood Outdoor Seating Memorable Views Locally Sourced

Fueled only by carbs and sweets in the morning, soon I was feeling peckish for some real food and protein on my Presidents Day drive home. I pulled into Avila Beach and headed toward Port San Luis harbor. In the past I've purchased the freshest of seafood from Olde Pork Inn to cook at home, but never eaten at its restaurant. Normally a dinner house with lunch service on weekends only, it was open for lunch on the holiday.

I parked my car by the shore in the public lot and walked the length of the pier to the end where Olde Port Inn holds court.

Olde Port Inn has a fish market, walk-up to-go window, full bar, and a full service restaurant on the water.

I had the fresh Dungeness crab and Gulf of Mexico wild prawn salad, $28. The prawns were especially good with firm almost crunchy texture and sweetly complex flavor. I liked the mustard dressing and asked for a second serving on the side. Sourdough rolls were nothing special, but served warm with butter were quite enjoyable.

Most of the seats inside and out offer water views. Protected from the cold wind in an enclosed area that catches the warmth of the sun, I was quite cozy during my meal.

Price seemed a bit high, but the food was solid if not exciting. And service was warm and friendly. I'd go back.

Gheesh, what happened to the old Chowhound - had to sign up and got totally lost trying to find the California board - not sure I will be able to get back on and have to use Firefox since it seems to reject Mac Safari.

Okay, talk about feeling peckish. Thanks for the reminder about this Avila Beach day trip for us in Santa Barbara - not sure when the sea lion season is but that pier can really be rocking and squawking when they decide to roost on the pier steps to the water. Your photos are wonderful.

Please do drop an email to moderators@chowhound.com and ask them to straighten this out. I hate to see you lose your long posting history on this site by assuming a new handle. This has happened to a few people and makes no sense at all.

Thanks for the tip to contact the moderator - this is a total mess for me right now. Absolutely no ability to use the website on my normal Safari, so I have to now go into Firefox and "sign in" each time rather than keep Chowhound easy to check with my bookmarks.

I would hate to lose the connection too - you have sent me off on so many good dining adventures up and down this state. Though I admit I am getting way behind and even disinterested in keeping up with Santa Barbara today.

Still trying to work out my problems with Chowhound website and Safari - it jumps all over the place once I get on, but at least it let me back on. Let's see what happens next. I can only find the California board using my old bookmark. Total loss to find it directly after opening the website itself. Stay tuned.
